In a rope hauled filter bed distributer of the type in which the filter bed has a central rail or track on which the distributer travels up and down the middle of the bed, the distributer is hauled by a parallel looped rope extending the length of the bed, and the rope is driven from a reversing drum at one end of the bed ; the two rope lengths travel in opposite directions and the distributer is clipped to one of them. A reversible drum 21, which may be driven by an electric motor associated with reversing switches, drives a distributer D<SP>1</SP>, supported on rails on a central trough 10, through a looped rope 20 passing over pulleys 22, 24, 26, 25 and 23, the distributer being connected to the loop at 27 and carrying a jockey pulley 28 for the return loop. A second distributer D<SP>2</SP> may be connected to the other loop at 29 so that the distributers converge at the centre of the bed. Fig. 3 (not shown) shows a double rope pull on a distributer connected to the inner pair of ropes, the outer pair passing over jockey pulleys. In Figs. 5 and 6, adjacent distributers 12, 12a run on rails 11, 50 and are hauled by separate loops from drums 21, 21a. A pair of distributers may be connected to each loop.
