Abstract
676,540. Roller crushers. SIMON. A. Oct. 5. 1949. No. 25584/49. Class 59 [Also in Group XIII] A crushing roller particularly for chocolate crushing machines is cooled by a fluid which, on introduction within the roll, enters a closed chamber intermediate the ends and from there is distributed towards the ends in confined streams in contact with the wall to be cooled, said streams escaping at or near the ends by way of a space within the roll. A crushing roller having a cylindrical wall 1 is provided with trunnions 2, 3 the flanges 7, 8 of which enclose the ends of the internal space of the roller. A cylindrical partition 9 within the roller forms an annular space between it and the wall 1 of the roller, the annular space being divided at the middle of the roller by a radial partition 15. Also at the middle of the roller two other radial partitions 12 within the cylindrical partition 9 form a chamber 11 which is supplied with cooling fluid through a pipe 5 passing through one of the roller trunnions 2. Cooling fluid passes from the chamber 11 into the annular space between the cylindrical wall 9 and the wall 1 of the roller through openings 14 on each side of the radial partition 15. Cooling fluid passes from the annular space at both ends through openings 17 into the main part of the space within the roller and leaves the roller through an annular passage 6 surrounding the pipe 5 in the entry trunnion 2. Fluid entering the internal space of the roller on the side of the chamber 11 remote from the trunnion 2 through which fluid passes, traverses the chamber 11 through pipes 16. Openings 14, 17 in the cylindrical partition 9 are adjustable. In a modification (not shown) a second annular space may be provided between the cylindrical partition 9 and the chamber 11 through which cooling fluid may be distributed before passing into the outer annular space within the roller. In another modification (not shown) the quantity of fluid contained by the roller is reduced by providing additional radial partitions in the main part of the internal space of the roller to form a chamber at each end of the roller for the reception of fluid from the annular space adjacent the cylindrical wall of the roller, the chambers being interconnected by pipes.
