In a cylindrical mill for grinding cement clinker and like material comprising a hollow rotary cylinder subdivided by radial longitudinal walls 6, 7, 8 and 9 into a plurality of chambers each containing grinding bodies and each interconnected for the passage of material from one chamber to another before passage to the mill outlet 3, one of the chambers being a preliminary grinding chamber into which raw material is fed from the mill inlet 2, the preliminary grinding chamber comprises two compartments A', A" separated from each other by a pair of foraminated walls 10', 10", the compartment A' being fed directly from the inlet 2 by a cylindrical distributor slide 11 and an internal radial conduit 12, and the compartment A" being fed from the inlet 2 by means of an external conduit arrangement comprising a central helical conduit 14 and two outer circular conduits 14' and 14". The external conduit arrangement is connected at one end to the inlet 2 by means of an internal radial conduit 13 and at the other end by an internal discharge conduit 17. The compartment A" connects with an external conduit 22 in the region of transverse end wall 18 via holes in the cylindrical wall 1, the conduit 22 connecting with an intermediate chamber B through an opening in the wall 1 and through an internal conduit (23, Fig. 2). A foraminated wall 19 is provided close to the wall 18. The chamber B terminates in a forminated wall 28' to form with mill end wall 15 a chamber D connecting with refining chambers C', C", which extend the entire length of the mill. A further external helical conduit 24 connects at one end with the conduit 22 and at the other end 24', via holes in the wall 1, with the adjoining ends of the compartments A', A", the conduit also connecting with a chamber 27 confined between the walls 10', 10".
