Abstract

The invention comprises fluorocarbon aldehydes of the formula CnF2n+1CHO and the corresponding fluorocarbon aldehydrols of formula CnF2n+1CH(OH)2, where n has the value 1 to 17. The aldehydrols may be prepared by reducing an acid CnF2n+1COOH with LiAlH4: dehydration of the aldehydrol, e.g. with concentrate sulphuric acid or P2O5, affords the free aldehyde, which must be stored dry and at low temperature. The acids CnF2n+1COOH may be prepared by hydrolysis of either CnF2n+1COF or CnF2n+1 CONH2, the former being prepared by electrolysis of a mixture of liquid hydrogen fluoride and the acid CnH2n+1COOH, and the latter being obtained by treatment of the acid fluoride with ammonia. The diacetates, e.g. CnF2n+1CH(OAc)2, may be prepared from the aldehydrols. Treatment of the aldehydes, e.g. C3F7CHO, with a Grignard reagent, e.g. MeMgI, affords an alcohol, e.g. C3F7CHOH.CH3. A example is given of the preparation of C3F7CH(OH)2 and C3F7CHO.
