Abstract

The invention comprises 1,1 - dimethyl - 2 - (3 - methyl - 7 - oxo - 3,5 - octadien - 1 - yl) - cyclopropane(I), this compound being made from pseudo-ionone as follows:- <FORM:1061731/C2/1> The required Zn(CH2I)2 is made by adding an ethereal solution of ZnI2, dropwise, to an ethereal solution of CH2N2. By treatment of I with an acidic reagent such as H3PO4, H3PO4-NaH2PO4, H2SO4, H2SO4-HOAc or BF3, it is converted to a mixture of irones.
