Class 122(i) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a diaphragm compressor or pump comprising two plates a, b, forming between them a biconical chamber c, a diaphragm clamped between the edges of the plates and oscillating in the chamber, valves carried by the plate a for suction and delivery of the gas or liquid to be treated, apertures b' in the other plate b for the passage of liquid under pressure from a reciprocating pump piston for actuating the diaphragm, and devices for detecting leakage in the event of cracking or perforation of the diaphragm, there is provided in the internal face and at the periphery of the plate a carrying the valves, at a place where the diaphragm is clamped between the plates, a circular groove i communicating with the exterior by an internal duct k so that any slight leakage of gas &c. resulting from a defect of the plate or diaphragm (not amounting to cracking &c. of the latter) is evacuated by this groove and duct without causing untimely working of the leakage detectors. A similar groove &c. may also be provided in the plate b to remove leakage of the driving liquid. The diaphragm comprises two outer thin diaphragms e<SP>1</SP>, e<SP>2</SP>, one on either, side of a diaphragm e having radial grooves. e<SP>3</SP> and extending. through a metalloplastic joint f<SP>1</SP>. If an outer diaphragm becomes perforated or cracked, leakage flows along the grooves into a chamber f and thence via a duct g or h to a detector. Specification 628,349 is referred to.
