A safety razor, of the kind in which a blade is resiliently clamped between a securing plate and a base plate which are separated by mechanical means for the insertion or removal of the blade, comprises a blade holding-base plate having a nipple projecting from one side, a handle attached to the nipple and a securing plate having a pair of lateral arms extending through slots in the nipple and rigidly connected to a sleeve slidable axially in the handle, a spring mounted on the sleeve and held under compression between the base-plate and a stem fitted into the end of the sleeve remote from the blade-holding end of the razor to press the securing plate and base plate together, and means for effecting axial sliding movement of the sleeve relative to the handle against the compression spring to separate the securing plate and the base plate. As shown, the bladeholding head comprises a base plate a and a securing plate b from which bosses 14 project to engage in apertures 102 in the blade c and in slots 28 in the base plate a which also act as guides for end portions 18<SP>1</SP> of lateral arms 18 connected to the securing plate b and projecting from a cylindrical sleeve 16 slidably mounted in the handle 38. A tubular nipple 26 projects from the under-surface of the plate a and has a cylindrical bore 26<SP>1</SP> closed by a plug 30 which limits the sliding movement of the sleeve 16 within which is a coil spring 32, the compression of which is regulated by a screwed stem 34, urging the plate b into clamping engagement with the plate a. To separate the plates the handle of the razor is held between the thumb and finger and moved towards the palm of the hand which presses on the button 40 to push the sleeve against the action of the spring 32. Projections 54 on the arms 18 lift a blade seated on the plate a so that it drops out of the razor. The plates may be locked, by a pin and L- shaped groove device, at maximum distance apart so that the razor may be rinsed. Blades are shaped as shown in Fig. 6 and are provided with wings 100 for saftey in handling and shoulders 101 which abut blade retaining shoulders 48<SP>111</SP> on the securing plate.
