[Class 30] The blade 14, Fig. 1, of a safety razor is adapted to be reciprocated transversely so that its edges rub over sharpening material on the underface of the cap 17. This is effected by a reciprocating movement of the guard 13, Figs. 1 and 8, which has upstanding end portions 16 engaging slots or recesses 16a in the ends of the blade which is also provided with slots 20 to allow movement over the usual positioning lugs 19 and over the cap stem 18. The guard 13 is mounted beneath a fixed head plate 10 on the end of the tubular handle 11 and is provided with slots 34 to allow of its transverse reciprocating movement, and with a central circular opening 35 to receive the upper flanged end 41 of a finger piece 37 slidable and rotatable on the handle 11. A spring 40 within the piece 37 normally urges the piece upwardly to engage in the opening 35 and hold the guard and blade against transverse movement, in which position a fixed finger 36 cn the guard engages a positioning notch 42 in the flange 41. The cap 17 is operated to clamp and flex the blade by. means of a rod 29 rotatable within a bush 32 in the handle 11 and having screwed connection with the cap stem 18. To sharpen the blade, the finger piece 37 is drawn downwardly clear of the opening 35 and finger 36 and is turned until a shallower and broader notch 43 is brought into engagement with the finger 36. By oscillating the piece 37 about the handle 11, the guard and blade receive their reciprocating movement.
