SAFETY RAZOR Filed Nov. 12, 1946 INVENTOR. Ff Pm mjt Giuseppe Patented Nov. 16, 1948 p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAFETY RAZOR Giuseppe F. Pinsuti, New York, N. Y. Application November 12, 1946, Serial No. 709,375
. Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in razors and particularly to razors of the safety type in which a relatively thin blade is carried by a blade-supporting member.
When using the safety razors now being marketed it is appreciated that, while shaving, the razor becomes clogged with lather along the cutting edges of the blade, so that after one or more strokes the razor will pull or scrape rather than out, which is highly undesirable.
Therefore, one object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which allows a cleaning of the blade supporting members as well as a sharpening of the razor blade without taking the razor apart and without removing the razor blade from the position in which it is while shaving. I i 1 Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is particularly well adapted for sharpening and honing the razor blade, without removing it from the razor, by means of a sharpening and honing device of the type described'in my co-pending patent application which is filed together with the present application.
Still another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which has a top member or retainer cap whose upper surface is shaped in such a manner as to afford a very convenient guide to facilitate the sharpening of the razor blade without removing it from its position.
Yet still a further object of the present inven tion is the provision of a device of the character described which is light in weight, handy in use, and simple in construction so that it can be manufactured and sold at a very reasonable price, but which is sturdy, durable, and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this type are frequently subjected.
With the foregoingand other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a preferred embodiment of my invention; a
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Figure '3 is a front elevation of the same;
I Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; I
Figure 5 is a sectional view Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a plan view of a blank used for a detail; and
Figure Tis a plan view of a modified blank used for a. detail.
'Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral i denotes an entire safety razor constructed in accordance with my invention. It has a customary handle 2 into whose upper portion is extended an internally threaded bore 3 adapted to have an externally threaded pin 4 screwed thereinto. The pin 4 is extended from the lower side of a top member or retainer cap 5 which has thin longitudinal side portions and a thick upwardly bulged center portion, and whose lower side is preferably provided with a longitudinal, narrow rib 6 that extends at both sides of the pin 4 toward the end portions of the retainer cap 5 and is adapted to be extended through the longi tudinal slot which is normallyprovided in the longitudinal center of a razor blade 15.
on the line 5--5 of The blade supporting member, which is adapted for supporting a razor blade [5 from below and which is normally in the hitherto known safety razors consists of one single piece, according to my invention consists of three pieces,
namely a longitudinal narrow center bar 1 and a pair of supporting members II and 12 which are movably attached to the center bar 1. The upper side of the center bar 1 preferably is pro vided with a longitudinal groove 8 adapted to receive the lower portion of the rib 6 when the part 5 is screwed upon the part I with a razor blade 15 interposed between the parts 5 and 1. The lower side of the center bar I is provided with a recess 9adapted to receive the upper extremity of the handle 2 (Figure 4), and this recessed portion 9 is perforated so that the pin 4 can loosely be extended therethrough.
The end portions ID of the center bar I preferably are reduced and cylindrical and are extended through the lug-shaped lateral portions of the supporting members i l and I2, so that the latter can be moved on the part I and can be either in a substantially horizontal position (which I call the shaving position) as shown in full lines in Figures 3 and 5, or in a substantially vertical position (which I call the cleaning and sharpening position) as indicated in I bers H and i2 of blanks.
dash-and-dotted lines in Figure 3. If the supporting members are in the last mentioned position, the edge portions of the razor blade iii are at both sides unobstructed, so that they can be sharpened and honed, thereby the raised center portion of the upper side of the part constituting a guide for moving the sharpening or honing device along the cutting edges of the blade l5; likewisa'in this'last: mentioned position the members I! and i2 themselves can be cleaned easily and any lather, hair and the like can be removed therefrom easily and quickly without taking the razor I apart and without removing the blade therefrom. t
In order to keep the supporting members" H and i2 safely in the shaving position, I prefer to provide them with suitable lockin means. I I prefer to carry out thisfeature of my inventionin the manner shown the drawing, where it will be seen that tongue portions i3',-which' have semi c ircular recesses M on their extremities, are provided on the members H and i2: and are inwardly extended toward the pin Vihen' the members Hand l2 are in the shaving position,
the extremities of the tongue portions it are between the lower side of the razor blade t5 and upper side of the center" bar l, and when then the handle 2 is screwed tightly upon the pin 4', said extremities are locked firmly between the parts T and i5, so that the members ii and ['3 areke'pt safely in the shaving position, thus constituting reliable guards which prevent a cutting of the face'by the blade. 55.
In order to move the supporting members H and $2 from the shaving position into the cleaning and sharpening position, all that is necessary is to loosen the handle .2, so that it is no longer tightly screwed upon the pin 4 but per extremity of a handle, with a longitudinal center bar havin an aperture through which said pin is loosely extended, and a guard plate being longitudinally divided into two members which are hinged to the extremities of said center bar and provided with inwardly extended tongues adapted to be pressed between said center bar and a razor blade which is inserted beneath said. retainer cap, so as to keep said members in a substantially horizontal position when said handle is screwed tightly upon said pin, but
that it still loosely engages the same, whereupon there will be sufiicient space between the parts I and lb" and 5 respectively to swing the members II and 52 about ninety degrees downward around the hingingpo-rtion-s ID.
In order to reduce the cost of my new and improved safety razor, Iprefer to make the men:-
In Figure 6- such a substantially E-shaped blank is shown consistihg of a main portion I 5, a tongue portion 1'! and side portions 12a whiehonly have to be bent at right angles relative to the main portion Iii order to make them ready for assembly}. In Figure'? a slightly modified substantially U-shaped blank is shown which has a pair of tongue portions 19 extending from the main portion 58 ad jacent the lug portions Ma. y I
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departingv from to allow said members to be brought into a substantially vertical position when said handle is loosened on said pin thus rendering both surfaces of the edge portions of said razor blade unobstructed for sharpening the blade without taking it off from the razor.
2. A safety razor comprisin a retainer cap having thin longitudinal side portions and a thick upwardly bulged center portion from whose lower side extends a' threaded pin, a handle havin a threaded axially into its upper portion extended bore adapted to engage said pin, a longitudinal narrow center bar through whose perforated middle portion said pin is loosely extended, and a guard plate being longitudinall divided into two supporting members which are hinged to the extremities of said center bar and provided with inwardly extended tongues adapted to have their extremities pressed between the upper side of said center bar and a razor blade which is inserted beneath said retainercap, so as to keep said members in a substantially horizontal position when said handle is screwed tightly upon saidpin, but to allow said members to be brought into. a substantially vertical position when said handle is loosened on said pin thus rendering thesurfaces of the razor blade and said supporting members accessible for removing the matter accumulated thereon while shaving.
3; A safety razorcomprising a retainer cap having thin longitudinal side portions and a thick upwardly bulged center portion from whose lower side extends a threaded pin, a handle havin a threaded axially into its upper portion extended bore adapted to engage said pin, a longitudinal narrow center bar havingreduced cylindrical end portions and a perforated middle portion through which said pin is loosely extended, and a guard the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted asillustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic andspecific features of the invention herein de scribed, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language-might be said to fall thereb'etween, Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isr v 1. In a safety razor, the combination of a re tamer eap having thin longitudinal side portions anda-thicl; center portlonfrom whose lower side extends a pin adapted tobe screwed into the up plate bein longitudinally divided into two sup porting members which have lug-shaped side portions that hingedly engage the cylindrical end portions of said center bar and which are provided with inwardly extended tongues adapted to have their extremities pressed between the upper side of said center bar and a razor blade which is inserted beneath said retainer cap, so as to keep said members in a-substantially horizontal position when said handle is screwed tightly upon said pin, butto allow said members to be brought into a substantially vertical position when said handle is loosened on saidpin th'us rendering both surfaces of the edge portions of the razor blade accessible without removing it from its position, thereby said upwardly bulged center portion of said retainer cap serving as a guide to facilitate the sharpening of the blade.
4. In a safety razor, the combination of a re tainer cap from whose lower side extends a pin adapted to be screwed into the upper extremity of a handle, with a longitudinal center bar having an aperture through which said pin is loosely extended, and two guard members hinged to the extremities of said center, bar-and provided with inwardly extended tongues adapted to be pressed between said center bar and a razor blade which is inserted beneath said retainer cap so as to keep said members in a substantially horizontal position when said handle is screwed tightly upon said pin, but allowing said members to be brought into a substantially vertical position when said handle is loosened on said pin thus rendering both surfaces of the edge portions of said razor blade unobstructed for sharpenin the blade without taking it on" from the razor.
5. In a safety razor, the combination of a retainer cap from whose lower side extends a threaded pin adapted to be screwed into the up per extremity of ahandle, with a longitudinal narrow center bar through whose perforated middle portion said pin is loosely extended, and two guard plate members hinged to the extremities of said center bar and provided with extended tongues adapted to have their extremities pressed between the upper side of said center bar and a. 20 2,111,217
razor blade which is inserted beneath said retainer cap so as to keep said members in a substantially horizontal position when said handle is screwed tightly upon said pin, but allowing said members to be brought into a substantially vertical position when said handle is loosened on said pin th'us rendering both surfaces of the edge portions of said razor blade accessible for sharpening without removing it from its usual position on the razor.
