UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE Application March 15, 1950, Serial N0. 149,663 InAi'gentina November 18. 1949 1 claim.
This invention relates to a safety razor.
The main object of the invention is to provide a safety razor capable of being handled with only one hand, both for placing and for removing the razor blade.
A further object is to provide a safety razor of the aforesaid type, wherein the used blade may be ejected by actuating the razor with the same hand used in holding same, without requiring the use of the other hand.
A still further object is to provide a safety razor which will not require the removal of any part thereof for cleaning purposes, the same hand holding the razor being suflicient to place same ready for cleaning.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the safety razor on line A-A in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same razor on line B-B in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is aside elevation ofthe blade holding head.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational, partly sectional view.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the safety razor in a position ready for receiving a razor blade; and
Fig. 6 is an elevational cross-sectional view taken along the lines C--C in Fig. 5.
The same reference characters are used to indicate like or corresponding parts or elements throughout the drawings.
With reference to the drawings, the safety razor in accordance with this invention com.- prises a blade-holding head A and a handle B. The blade-.holding head A comprises a base plate a and a securing plate b, between which a razor blade is arranged to be clamped. The securing plate b is of rectangular shape and converging concave-convex in cross-section, thereby dening an inner concave face Ill and an outer convex face l2, and two major edges of said plate being sha1-p due to the convergence between both faces I0 and i2. A pair of short cylindrical stems M extend from the inner concave face I0 of said plate b, said stems having rounded free ends and being located so as to correspond with the orifices or slots usually formed in the razor blade for clamping same between plates a and b.
Said securing plate bis mounted on the handle B by means oi a cylindrical tubular member `I6 from one of the ends of which a pair of arms I8 perpendicular thereto and diametrically opposite each other are extended laterally, with the end portions I3 thereof turned perpendicularly forward with respect to said end of the tubular member It so as to form a fork, the free ends of said 2 arms I8 being xed to the middle portion ofthe side edges of securing plate b, arranged with a concave face l0 thereof facing the end of said tubular member I6.
The base plate a. is also rectangular-shaped, having the two major sides suitably toothed so as to form` combs 20, and a convex face 22 against which the razor blade is adapted and a concave face 24 from which there is projected a tubular nozzle 26 having a cylindrical bore 26 extending through said' plate a to the Covex face thereof, the longitudinal axis of said bore being perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of said plate, coinciding with the center thereof.
.Said tubular member lt is mounted with a slidable adjustment in said bore 26', the base plate. a being formed with two longitudinal slots 28 each extending from one of the side edges thereof to said bore and partly into .said nozsle .26, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The purpose of said slots 28 is to allow the juxtaposition oi theconceve face l!! of the securing plate b against the convex face 22 of. base plate c. said slots 23 constituting guides for saidk arms I8. Registering with the cylindrical stems I4 on securing plate b, the edges of said slots 28 are provided with small cylindrical notches 2B' cooperatingly formed on both edges so as to allow the insertion of said stems in the base plate a, inasmuch as the diameter of said stems is larger than the width of said slots 28.
-In order to prevent the tubular member i6 from projecting outwardly of the nozzle 28 in front of the base plate a, the latter is provided with a plug member 30 screwed into the mouth of bore 26 and constituting a stop limiting the movements of said tubular member I6 with re spect to nozzle 28, and consequently the movement of securing plate b away from the base plate a.
A compression coil spring 32 is arranged within the tubular member I6, between said plug 30 and a cylindrical stem 34 screwed into said tubular member I8- at the end opposite that facing the plug 39, said cylindrical stem 34 serving to rege ulate the tension of spring 32', for which purpose a cylindrical end portion 3A of said stem projects -from thecorresponding end of tubular mem.- ber 16 said portion illl having a smaller diameter than said stem and having a longitudinal cut 3B.
with the spring 32 inserted between the cylin drical stem 34 adapted to the t-ubulai7 member I6 and the plug an adapted to the base piate a.' th securing plate b will be yieldingly urged against the latter, whereby in order .to Separate itfrom.
the tubular handle 38 and provided with an annular shoulder 40 cooperating with the flange 38 of the tubular handle 38; the purpose of said shoulder 40' is to prevent said button from being forced out of said handle 33 by the action of spring 32, since the tubular member I is yieldingly urged by spring 32 against button 40.
In order to adjust the tension of spring 32 by means of the cylindrical stem 34 without removing the push-button 40, said button is provided with a blind longitudinal hole 40" open at the inner end thereof and housing said end portion 34 of stem 34 therein. For the connection with portion 34, said button 40 has a cylindrical cross-piece 42 extending diametrically in said hole 40 through the longitudinal cut 36 in said end portion 34'. Thus, the rotation of button 40 will cause the rotation of cylindrical stem 34, and depending on its direction, said rotation will increase or reduce the tension of spring 32.
In order to lock said button 40 relative to the tubular handle 38 in an operative position wherein the end of said tubular handle 38 facing plug 30 will engage the latter, said position corresponding to the maximum separation between base plate a and securing plate b, there is provided a locking means formed by an L-shaped groove 44 in the tubular handle 3B, adapted to be engaged by a projection 45 provided on the button 40.
In the embodiment shown, the safety razor is intended to be used with razor blades of the type shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. This blade is designated with the reference letter C and the non-cutting side edges thereof are provided with a pair of safety wings |00 the length of which is smaller than the respective side so as to form a pair of shoulders I0 I Inasmuch as the razor blade C should be located laterally between the two arms I8 on securing plate b, the distance separating them is slightly greater than the length of the blade, measured between the edges of said safety wings I00. The end portion I8 of said arms I8 are provided with a lateral enlargement 48 extending in both arms towards the same sharp edge of the securing plate b, as may be seen in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, said enlargement having a lower edge 48' substantially parallel to the edge I8" of the respective arm I8, provided with an inner ange forming a blade-retaining shoulder 48 against which one of the blade shoulders IOI is adapted to abut in a position wherein the blade holes |02 engaged by the retention cylindrical stems I4 on plate b remain opposite said stems I4.
As in order to place therazor blade between the plates a and b of the 4safety razor head A, it is usually held between the middle finger and the thumb of the same hand bearing on the edges of the safety wings I00, the edge I8 of each arm I3 is provided with a circular notch 50, so that in placing the blade C between said plates a and b it may be held until the retaining shoulders IOI thereof engage the aforesaid shoulders 48". For
readily positioned between plates a and b.
the same purpose, the securing plate b is provided with two side notches 52, each of which extends along the portion of the side edge of said plate comprised between the edge I8" of the respective arm I8 and the sharp edge of the plate opposite that towards which the arm enlargements 4B are directed.
` For the purpose of separating the blade C from the convex face 22 of base plate a in order to remove same from the razor head, the portion of the arms I8 facing the cylindrical stems I4 on plate b is provided with a pair of blade-pushing stops 54. Each stop 54 is spaced from the opposite stem I4 fo-r a distance larger than the thickness of the razor blade C, whereby it may be It should be noted that in order to separate the blade from the base plate a, it will be sufcient to make said Lstops to project slightly from the con- Vex face 22 thereof, said button 40 being provided with a removable stop for limiting the separation of said plates so that said stops 54 will only project for a slight distance. Said removable stop may be constituted by the projection 45 of the aforesaid locking means, which upon pressing said button and not registering with the corresponding groove 44, will abut against the end of the tubular handle 38.
Coinciding with each of the blade retaining shoulders 48, the corresponding side edge of base plate a is formed with a notch 5S for the purpose of allowing the passage of the respective shoulder, so that plates a and b may be juxtaposed.
In order to mount the razor blade C between plates a and b, the operation of the safety razor of this invention is as follows: The razor is held with the left hand by the tubular handle 38, between the foreiinger and the thumb, immediately behind the base plate a with push-button 40 bearing against the palm of the hand. Thus, in moving said fingers in the direction thereof, the spring 32 will be compressed, thereby separating plates a. and b from each other. Thereafter, by
taking the razor blade C by the safety wings |00 between the middle finger and the thumb of the right hand, it is inserted between plates a and b located laterally between the free end portions I 8 of arms IS which will act as guides therefor, until it remains with the retaining shoulders IOI bearing on the sholders 48" of securing plate b. By then moving the forenger and thumb of the left hand away from the palm of the same hand,
the antagonistic action acting thereon will be released, whereby the securing plate b will be yieldingly pressed against base plate a, with the razor blade C held firmly therebetween and the safety razor will be ready for use.
In order to remove the blade C from the safety razor, the latter is held with either hand in the same manner as explained above for placing the blade, but so that the shoulders 48 on securing plate b remain upwardly, whereby upon moving the thumb and foreiinger towards the palm ofv the hand, said plates a and b will separate from each other and the blade C will be removed from the base plate a by said stops 54, falling by gravity. While still holding the razor, the tubular handle 33 is then rotated between the thumb and foreflnger, the button 40 being held fixed due to the fact that it is pressed against the palm of the hand, until the projection 45 of the aforesaid locking means engages the groove 44. This Y will increase the separation between plates a and lb and will cause said stops 54 to project further with respect to the convex face 22 of plate a, and a slight rotation of the tubular handle 38 will then be sufficient for said projection 45 to remain locked in said groove 44. whereby all the parts forming the razor head A will remain in condition for cleaning by means of a water jet.
It is evident that in carrying out this invention, several changes, modifications and/r alterations will occur to those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the invention as clearly set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
A safety razor which comprises a blade-holding head for holding a razor blade, and a tubular handle formed to define a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinal slots and connected to said head, said blade-holding head consisting of a base plate having a face for holding said blade, and a securing plate for securing said blade against said face of said base plate, said plates being parallelly movable to and from each other to allow the placing of said razor blade therebetween with a movement perpendicular to the movement of said plates, a tubular member slidably mounted in said tubular handle, having a pair of lateral arms projecting therefrom in opposite direction through said longitudinal slots, said base plate being located between said arms, said securing plate being fixed to the ends of said arms, an adjustable plug screwed in the end of said tubular member remote from said base plate, a compression coil spring mounted within said tubular member and interposed between said base plate and said plug for adjusting the tension of 'said spring, said securing plate having retention stem means for retaining a perforated blade when said plates are pressed one against the other, a push-button for pushing said tubular member against the action of said spring mounted at the free end of said handle and coupled to said plug to rotate the same, locking means for locking said push button in operative position against said spring, guides in said securing plate for positioning said razor blade between said plates, and retaining shoulder means adapted to hold said blade correctly positioned between said plates.
