Description
G. TAYLOR SAFETY RAZOR jme 30, QBG.
Filed July lO, 1935 A Avlis? Patented June 30, 1936 UNITED STATES PA'IENT OFFICE Application `luly 10, 1935, Serial No. 30,613 In Great Britain April 25, 1935- '1 Claims.
l This'invention relates to safety razors and more specifically to a safety razor having an independent guard plate and meansy for varying its positionwith regard to the cutting edges of the blade. The object of the invention isI to provide a simple and practical form of device for varying' the space between the edge.v of the blade and the guard so that either a moderate or a keener shave may be obtained depending upon the necessities of the case and depending also upon the particular idiosyncrasies of the person being shaved.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a form'o clamping device which mayy be simpIy sprung into clamping position with the blade in place by the pressure of a finger', and since in a device with a spring clamp the position of the edges of the bladel due to exing is a'fi'xed one, it is found necessary to have some adjustment possible of the guard in relation to the edge of theblade, which it is the aim of this device to provide.'
u Other objects of the invention will appear in the following description of the accompanying drawing illustrating preferred embodiments. of
the invention in Wh.ich:-`
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the razor in operative position but with the end adjusted at maximum opening;
"Figure 2 is a sectional View 'on the line A-A of Figure l;
Figures 3 to 8 show the several parts of Figure 1' separated, namely:
1 Figure 3 shows a backing plate .and stem;
Figure 4 a spring; i
Figure 5 an independent guard plate Figure 6 the adjusting nut;
Figure 7 the handle and carrier, and
Figure 8 the spring catch;
Figure 9 shows a carrier with pins for guiding same;
Figure 10 shows ,a spring adapted to t the guide pins;
Figure 11 is another form of the independent guard plate;
Figure 12 is an underside view of same bearing a scale by which the adjustment of the guard is regulated.
In order to show the details more clearly Figures 1 to 8 are drawn to an enlarged scale and it should be understood that Figures 9 to 12 are employed with a similar handle and carrier to that shown in Figure 1, the only variation being in the means for guiding the guard plate thereon.
Referring rst to Figures l to 8, I is a handle connected with an auxiliary carrier 2, the handle being provided with a hole 3 into which is pressed the stem 4 on the backing plate 5 provided, as shown, with guide pins 6 entering holes in the carrier 2. The stern 4 is also provided with a groove I on its inner end and a tapered extrem- 5 ity 8.
Arranged transversely across the handle is the clasp i6' provided with a hole I I and having three prongs I2, L3,- .ti of which' the central one is tted with a nger disc Iiand the spring I6, the l0 clasp EG being arranged to slide within the slot I'I in the handle so that the edges of the slot are caught by the spring I6,
By inserting the blade 20 between the backing plate 5 and the carrier 2 and pressing down the l5 stern the groove 'I will be caught by the end of the clasp I controlled by the spring IS and will be instantaneously secured to the carrier with the blade iiexed. i
ProvidedA on the handle I is an' enlargement 2I 20 carrying' a screw thread, and arranged tol engage therewith is the adjusting nut 22.
23 is an independent guard plate provided with the guide pin holes 2'4 and a central hole 25 through which the handle is passed before the 25l mounting of the nut 22. The guard plate 23 is also provided at each end with recesses 26 into which the ends 2l of the carrier 2 t, the leaf spring 28 lalso having end lugs which t within the recesses 26, while its central portion is cut 30 away at 29 to admit both the handle and the guide pins 6.
It will be seen that the nut 22 is made with a pointer 30 which works in conjunction with a scale suchlas 3 I, ,as shown in Figure 12 where the 35 nutis removed but the pointer 3U is shown diagrammatically to indicate the device; it Will be understood that a scale such as 3I is marked also on the underneath side of the guard plate 23 of Figure 5.
The blade having been placed on the backing plate 5 and the stem groove pushed home until caught by the spring clasp I0, it is rmly secured to the carrier 2 by the action of the spring I6, being then permanently xed as regards its edges 9, 45 9; before the clasp I0 is mounted in the slot I1 the spring 28 and the guard plate 23 are slid into position with the end of the spring 28 and the end 2'! of the carrier occupying the recesses 26 of the plate 23. Thereafter the nut 22 can be 50 screwed up on the thread 2l without causing the rotation of the plate 23 about the handle.
On reference to Figure 2 it will be seen that screwing up of the nut 22 pushes up the plate 23 so that its guard edges approach nearer to the 55 blade edgesl 9, 9, by which means the gap 33 is reduced. I'Ihe reduction of this gap results in a smooth shave whichiis not severe on the skin and wouldbe likely to be used by people with a delicate skin. 2 Y
When a rough shave is required the nut 22 is adjusted inl the opposite direction and a keener shave is obtainable; the various settings of the raznr gap being -adjfusted according to the scale 3| andthe turning of the nut soy that its pointer Sacomes to a particular position on the scale which is found by experience to be the best for Y the particular individual using the razor.
As will be seen by the markings? Keen and Mediumand the ,accompanying arrows, adjustment takes place and the scale is marked in accordance with a clock (for example) so that an operator will iind it easier to remember the position in which to set the adjusting screw.
For removal of a blade it is merely necessary' to press on the linger dise I5 upon which the spring I6 is mounted, when-the hole I I centralizes itself inrelation to the end 8 and the backing plate 5 comes looseffdue to the action of the blade 20 unexing, Y Y
In the device sli-own in Figures 9 to 12,"four pins 34 are used to guidethe guard plate 35. corresponding holes 36 being made therein to suit the position of the-pins 34, and in this case the end 3'I of fthe guard plate need `not be recessed but may eorrespond to the underside curves of the backing plate as shown inFigure 2.
YThe norihal guide pins IiV of the backingY plate wil occupy the holes 38, 39 as before. j;
from the preceding Vdescription it will seen tl'rat a simple pressure with the iinger on the disc I5 immediately releases the blade and similair'pressure on the backing plate returnsE it to place. Consequently, replacement or removal for cleaning is attained very quickly,I arid by means of a device that is not likely to getout of order, accompanied by means Vfor varying the gap between the blade and theguard, which is highly importantin a razor of this character.
