Razors with replaceable blades are advantageous in view of the fact that such blades may be conveniently replaced whenever they become dull, do not require manual sharpening, and may be conveniently carried during travel without also requiring additional sharpening paraphernalia. Ordinarily, best results are obtained from a razor of this type which has a blade that will not readily vibrate or move out of a predetermined position with respect to the supporting elements. It is also extremely important that such razors have mounting means which will detachably support the individual blades firmly with respect to the supporting elements, and in such a manner that such blades may be conveniently replaced whenever required. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a replaceable blade type razor which is extremely simple in construction, efficient in operation, and which may be readily handled during use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a replaceable blade type razor having a blade mounting plate which will firmly secure the blade in a position which will minimize vibration and movement of the blade with respect thereto, and-which may be manually manipulated to change the blade whenever required.
An additional object of the present invention is to provide a replaceable blade type razor having a cover member enclosing substantially all but the cutting edge of the blade and supporting plate, which minimizes vibration and accurately positions the blade in place.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide a replaceable blade razor of the above type in which an adapter is provided that includes teeth adjacent to the cutting edge of the blade for guiding hair into contact with the blade, and which assembly is particularly useful for shaping hair upon a head.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a razor of the type described having a minimum number of parts, which can be readily manufactured of any desired material, and which can be conveniently manipulated for all operations with a minimum amount of skill and experience.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 to 5 thereof, a replaceable blade razor 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a handle 12 of any desired construction, hingedly secured to a main mounting plate 15, such as by a hinge pin 13. This handle 12 may be provided with an enlarged longitudinal slot for receiving. the mounting plate 15 and attached parts when rotated to a closed position, in a conventional manner. Extending outwardly from one end of the mounting plate 15, is an extension 17 that serves as an abutment for a finger during use, as does a cutout 18 on the opposite side of the pivot pin 13. Thus, the handle 12, extension '17, and cutout 18 serve as holding means for manipulating the razor in use.
As is more clearly shown in FIGURES 2 and 4 of the drawing, the main mounting plate 15 has a tubular portion 20 formed along one longitudinal edge, such tubular portion defining a longitudinal slot 21 along one side of the main mounting plate 15. The same side of the mounting plate 15 also carries a plurality of outwardly projecting studs 23 having heads that are supported in outwardly spaced relationship with the mounting plate. A replaceable blade 27, having a cutting edge 28 along one longitudinal side edge thereof, is provided with bayonet slots 24, 25, at least equal in number to the number of studs 23 carried by the main mounting plate 15, and spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the mounting studs. Each such bayonet slot includes an enlarged central aperture '24 for receiving the head of the stud 23 therethrough, and a pair of longitudinally oppositely extending slots 25 that slidably receive the intermediate portion of the stud therewithin. Thus, to assemble a blade 27 upon the main mounting plate 15, it is first necessary to insert the dull longitudinal edge thereof into the tubular portion 20 through the space 21, following which the heads of the studs 23 are received through the central apertures 24- of the bayonet slots, so that the blade is free to move in either longitudinal direction, and particularly toward the handle 12, with the longitudinal slots 25 at one end of the apertures 24 receiving the intermediate portions of the studs slidably therewithin. It will be noted that all of the apertures and slots 24, 25 of the blade are in axial alignment with each other, thus enabling the blade to be secured upon the main mounting plate by a simple longitudinal displacement of the blade after it has been placed upon the mounting studs 23.
A cover member 36, having a pair of substantially identical sides 31 integrally connected together at one end by a central bight portion 33, serves to clamp the blade in position upon the main mounting plate. These sides 31 yieldably converge in a direction away from the bight portion 33, toward the free edges of the sides. The radius of curvature of the central bight portion 33 corresponds substantially to the radius of curvature of the tubular portion 21 of the main mounting plate 15, which tubular portion is also symmetrical with the plane of the mounting plate 15. While one end of the cover 30 is open, the opposite end thereof is provided with an end wall 35 which terminates short of the free edges of the sides 31 so as .to prevent interference With the spring action thereof. This end wall serves as a stop for limiting the longitudinal movement of the cover member with respect to the mounting plate and blade during assembly, prevents longitudinal movement of the blade in a direction away from the handle 12 out of locked engagement with the studs 23, and which also serves as a guard by preventing contact of the adjacent ends of the mounting plate and blade with the skin. Thus, after the blade 27 has been assembled with the mounting elements of the main mounting plate 15, the cover member 30 is applied simply by inserting the free end of the assembled mounting plate and blade 27 into the open end of the cover member, with the free edges of the sides 31 of the cover member slidably engaging With the opposite sides of the blade 27 adjacent to the cutting edge 28. The cutting edge 28 of the blade thus projects outwardly from the converting edges of the cover member 30 a sufiicient distance to cut the hair, while being sufficiently rigidly held to prevent disassembly, vibration, and flexing thereof during use.
Reference is now made to FIGURES 6- to 8 of the drawing, which illustrates the use of a modified form of cover member 40. This cover member is of substantially the same size as the cover member 30 hereinbefore described and is also provided with an end wall 41 and a pair of sides 42 integrally connected together along one longitudinal side by means of a central bight portion 43. However, one of the converging sides 4-2 is provided with an extension 45 that defines a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart teeth 46 having spaces 47 therebetween. These teeth extend beyond the cutting edge 28 of the blade 27 and serve to limit the amount of hair coming into contact with the cutting edge 28 of the blade. :Thus, this adapter, which is slidably mounted upon the mounting plate 15 in a manner similar to that in which the cover member 30 is mounted upon the mounting plate 15, is particularly useful for shaping a head of hair as it limits the amount of hair cut during each stroke and effectively combs the hair as it is being shaved.
Because of the relatively few numbers of parts and alignment of the mounting elements, a dull razor blade may be readily replaced when required in a simple and efficient manner. As a result, the unit requires only the removal of the cover member to free the blade for removal from the mounting plate 15 for replacement by a ne wblade in a simple two step operation. This is especially convenient for professional and commercial hairdressers which rely upon the efficient use of time for setting hair, as well as for home users.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A razor for retaining a removable blade comprising a blade mounting device provided with a handle at one end; said mounting device comprising a substantially flat rectangular plate provided with a top mounting surface and a pair of spaced apart longitudinal top and bottom edges, and a hollow tubular portion connected with the top edge of the plate substantially symmetrical With the mounting surface of said plate; said tubular portion defining a longitudinal slot proximate the top edge and mounting surface of said plate for receiving within said tubular portion one side edge of said blade and engaging said blade along a limited contact region allowing pivotal movement of said blade for varying the angular displacement of said blade from the mounting surface of said plate; said mounting plate having a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart studs each having a shank and an enlarged head portion projecting outwardly from the mounting surface of said plate for receiving a blade having a pair of openings entirely bounded by said blade including a pair of central enlarged openings spaced apart to conform with the spacing of the studs of said mounting plate and receiving therethrough the head portions of the studs of said mounting plate when said blade has one side edge reciv l through the slot defined by said tubular portion of said mounting device and is pivoted by movement about the limited contact region along said slot for angularly displacing said blade toward the mounting surface of said mounting plate while said enlarged openings are in alignment with said studs of said mounting device, and said pair of central enlarged openings of said blade each also are provided with narrowed opening regions extending in opposite longitudinal directions from said central opening either of which respectively receives therein the shank portion of said stud when said blade is slid in either longitudinal direction to its retained position while lying on the mounting surface after the heads of said studs extend through the central openings of said blade for having the heads of said studs positioned overlying said narrowed openings of said blade preventing the angular displacement of said blade with respect to the mounting surface of said plate.
2. A razor for retaining a removable blade comprising a blade mounting device with a handle at one end; said mounting device comprising a substantially fiat rectangular plate provided with a top mounting surface and a pair of spaced apart longitudinal top and bottom edges, and a hollow tubular portion connected with the top edge of the plate substantially symmetrical with the mounting surface of said plate; said tubular portion defining a longitudinal slot proximate the top edge and mounting surface of said plate for receiving one side edge of a blade therewithin and engaging said blade along a limited contact region allowing pivotal movement of said blade for varying the angular displacement of said blade from the mounting surface of said plate; said mounting plate having a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart studs each having a shank and an enlarged head portion projecting outwardly from the mounting surface of said plate for receiving a blade having a pair of openings entirely bounded by said blade including a pair of central enlarged openings spaced apart to conform with the spacing of the studs of said mounting plate for receiving therethrough the head portions of the studs of said mounting plate when said blade has one side edge received through the slot defined by said tubular portion of said mounting means and is pivoted by movement about a limited con tact region along said slot for angularly displacing said blade toward the mounting surface of said mounting plate while said enlarged openings are in alignment with said studs of said mounting device; the shank of each of said .studs of said mounting plate having a reduced cross section with respect to its head for being respectively receivable within either of the narrowed opening regions extending in opposite longitudinal directions from each of the central openings of said blade when said blade is slid in either longitudinal direction to its retained position after the heads of said studs extend through the central openings of said blade for having the heads of said studs positioned overlying said narrowed openings of said blade preventing the angular displacement of said blade with respect tothe mounting surface of said plate; and a cover member having a pair of sides with extending edges and a central tubular bight portion for frictionally receiving therein the tubular portion of said mounting device and restraining longitudinal movement between said mounting device and blade for maintaining said blade in its retained position; the sides of said cover member being extended for oppositely engaging and rigidly embracing only at its extending edges said blade along a limited linear longitudinal region proximate the lower side edge of said blade so that said blade is firmly retained along its upper side edge by said tubular portion, the region intermediate its side edges by said studs and its lower side edge by the extending edges of said cover member.

A RAZOR FOR RETAINING A REMOVABLE BLADE COMPRISING A BLADE MOUNTING DEVICE PROVIDED WITH A HANDLE AT ONE END; SAID MOUNTING DEVICE COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY FLAT RECTANGULAR PLATE PROVIDED WITH A TOP MOUNTING SURFACE AND A PAIR OF SPACED APART LONGITUDINAL TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES, AND A HOLLOW TUBULAR PORTION CONNECTED WITH THE TOP EDGE OF THE PLATE SUBSTANTIALLY SYMMETRICAL WITH THE MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID PLATE; SAID TUBULAR PORTION DEFINING A LONGITUDINAL SLOT PROXIMATE THE TOP EDGE AND MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID PLATE FOR RECEIVING WITHIN SAID TUBULAR PORTION ONE SIDE EDGE OF SAID BLADE AND ENGAGING SAID BLADE ALONG A LIMITED CONTACT REGION ALLOWING PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF SAID BLADE FOR VARYING THE ANGULAR DISPLACEMENT OF SAID BLADE FROM THE MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID PLATE; SAID MOUNTING PLATE HAVING A PLURALITY OF LONGITUDINALLY SPACED APART STUDS EACH HAVING A SHANK AND AN ENLARGED HEAD PORTION PROJECTING OUTWARDLY FROM THE MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID PLATE FOR RECEIVING A BLADE HAVING A PAIR OF OPENINGS ENTIRELY BOUNDED BY SAID BLADE INCLUDING A PAIR OF CENTRAL ENLARGED OPENINGS SPACED APART TO CONFORM WITH THE SPACING OF THE STUDS OF SAID MOUNTING PLATE AND RECEIVING THERETHROUGH THE HEAD PORTIONS OF THE STUDS OF SAID MOUNTING PLATE WHEN SAID BLADE HAS ONE SIDE EDGE RECEIVED THROUGH THE SLOT DEFINED BY SAID TUBULAR PORTION OF SAID MOUNTING DEVICE AND IS PIVOTED BY MOVEMENT ABOUT THE LIMITED CONTACT REGION ALONG SAID SLOT FOR ANGULARLY DISPLACING SAID BLADE TOWARD THE MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID MOUNTING PLATE WHILE SAID ENLARGED OPENINGS ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH SAID STUDS OF SAID MOUNTING DEVICE, AND SAID PAIR OF CENTRAL ENLARGED OPENINGS OF SAID BLADE EACH ALSO ARE PROVIDED WITH NARROWED OPENING REGIONS EXTENDING IN OPPOSITE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTIONS FROM SAID CENTRAL OPENING EITHER OF WHICH RESPECTIVELY RECEIVES THEREIN THE SHANK PORTION OF SAID STUD WHEN SAID BLADE IS SLID IN EITHER LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION TO ITS RETAINED POSITION WHILE LYING ON THE MOUNTING SURFACE AFTER THE HEADS OF SAID STUDS EXTEND THROUGH THE CENTRAL OPENINGS OF SAID BLADE FOR HAVING THE HEADS OF SAID STUDS POSITIONED OVERLYING SAID NARROW OPENINGS OF SAID BLADE PREVENTING THE ANGULAR DISPLACEMENT OF SAID BLADE WITH RESPECT TO THE MOUNTING SURFACE OF SAID PLATE.
