. W. G. WALLENBECK RAZOR Filed Aug. 28, i925 UNITED STATES' PATENT.OFFICE.
wmim o. wmnmancx, or calca rumors. anon..
Application lied August 88, 1925. Serial lo. 52,988.
My invention relates to razors and particularly to guards for razor b lades.
The invention has among its other `obects the production of a device of the kind v.'I described which is convenient., neat and attractive in appearance and satisfactoryffor use wherever found applicable.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an improved guard for safety razor blades, which guard will serve asa. gauge when the razor blade is used to cut hair:
One'fo'rm of the invention is embodied `in a guard adapted to be used in connection with a razor blade holder of the typeshown and described in the copending application Serial No. 643,992, filed June 7, 1923, by Wilford G. Raymond. The improved guard is preferably formed from a piece of sheet metal having some resiliency, and it preferably comprises a plurality of comb-like teeth which prevent the user from in iuring himself. The guard is provided ,with an extension which projects laterally from the razor blade in such manner that the cutting edge of the blade is spaced from the scalp of the user when the razor is employed to cut hair.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a safety ra zor blade holder to which a guard embodying my invention may be applied;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 shows a guard embodying my 1nvention applied to the holder shown in Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4--4 of 3; and ig. 5 is a. perspective view of the 1inproved guard.
Referring for the present to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, which figures show a safety' razor blade holder of the type shown and described in the afore-mentioned copending application, the reference character 11 designates in general an integral holder which comprises a metal handle l2 of non-circular cross-section, the handle 12 being 'oined to an integral head portion 13 which is shaped to provide a plurality of substantially parallel lips 14 adapted to engage safety razor blade 15 of well known construction. The lips 14 frictionally engage the blade 15 and are urged against the blade by a readily detachable clip 17. The cli 17 is preferably formed from sheet metal aving some resiliency and is formed with two substantially parallel side portions 18, these side portions 18 terminating in inwardly turned lips 20 adapted to engage the lips 14.
The above described device is particularly adapted for holding the blade 15 when the blade 1.5 is to be used as a cutting implement. The im roved device also facilitates the task of honing the blade.
Referring now to Figs. 3 to 5. inclusive, the reference character 10 designates in general a guard embodying the novel features of my invention. The improved guard may i vbe quickly and easily assembled with and 80 removed from the holder-11, the clip 17 being first removed from the head portion 13. As best shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the guard 10 comprises a fiat wall 22 adapted to lie parallel to the blade 15 when theguard is assembled with the holder 11. The fiat wall 22 is disposed intermediate arcuate portions 23 and 24, the arcuate portion 24 terminating in a plurality of elongated, comb-like teeth 25 which project beyond the exposed cutting edge of the blade 15. An arcuate wall 27 formed substantially opposite the Hat wall 22 extends or bulges laterally withl respect to the blade 15. The guard 10 is preferably formed Jfrom sheet metal having some resiliency so that it will frictionally engage the holder 11 and the blade 15 whenl it is correctly positioned thereon, the free end of the arcuate wall 27 terminating in a. lip 29 adapted to engage the blade 15. To 100 secure the guard 10 upon the head portion 13 the clip 17 is preferably inserted in the bulge formed by the arcuate wall 27 (see Fig. 4). For this purpose, the clip 17 is so formed that when it is assembled with the 105 guard 10 in the manner illustrated in Fi 4 it-will be slightly compressed. Obvious y the clip 17 will then prevent relative displacement between the guard 10 and the head portion 13.
When the guard 10 is positioned upon the holder 11 in Athe manner illustrated in the drawing, the assembled device may be used as a safety razor, the device bein used in such manner that the teeth 25 an the fiattened portion 22 lie against or adjacent the skin of the user. The teeth 25 prevent the user from injuring himself. When the device is to be used to cut hair, it is applied to the skin or scalp of the user in such manner that the teeth 25 and the arcuate wall 27 lie against or adjacent'the skin or scalp of the user. When the device is used in this manner, the exposed cutting edge of the blade 15 is spaced from the skin or scalp of the user and the hair is cut to a predetermined length. It will be noted that the guard 10 is reversible, which feature facilitates the use of the device.
Having thusdescribed my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from' the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exactvform, construction, arrangement andv combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a Safety razor blade holder, of a resilient removable clip for securing the blade in the holder, and a guard includingv an arcuate wall bulging laterally at one side of the holder, said clip removably disposed Within the bulging por- Luana? tion and bearing against the blade holder to retain the guard 1n ition. l g
2. A safety razor b ade guard including opposed arcuate portions, Va! substantially fiat wall between said arcuate portions at one s1 de, one of said arcuate portions termmating into 'a plurality of comb-like teeth, the other wall of said guard being bulged laterally"witl1 its lower edge terminating into a lip for engaging a blade disposed 'between said Hat wall andthe bulged portion, a safety razor blade guard consisting of a substantially rectangular sheet of metal having one edge terminating into a plurality of comb-like teeth, and one side wall of the sheet being bulged laterally relatlve to the other side and terminating into im lig/ disposed adjacent the edge bearing the 3. The combination with a. safet razor blade holder, of a resilient remova le clip for securing the blade in the holder, and a guard for the blade including a flat side Wall at one side of the holder with one edge thereof terminating into a plurality of comblike teeth,` the other side wall of said guard being bulged laterally with its lower edge terminating into a lip bearing against the' blade and said clip being positioned Within the bulged wall and yieldably engaging the blade holder for retaining said guard in position upon the holder.
.In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
WILLIAM G. WALLENBECK.
