The razor comprises a guard l and a cover plate 2 therefor. The razor blade 3 is clamped between the guard and plate, and these three assembled parts are mounted on a handle 4, having screw threads in one end to engage a threaded stud 5 on the under face of the cover plate 2 and passing through an aperture 6 in the guard In the middle of the guard I is a depression or cavity 1 which is preferably widest at the middle where the aperture 6 is located, and tapers towards the ends of the guard I. Adjacent the long transverse edges of the guard and parallel thereto are ribs 8 to seat the blade 3, plate 2 and the cutting edges of the blade projecting beyond these ribs.
When the handle is screwed tight upon the stud 5, the cover plate 2, which has the usual shape and is concave on its under face, presses upon the sides of the blade 3 beyond the ribs 8 and forces these edges towards the guard I. bore 12 adjacent the outer end of the handle also has an enlarged shouldered portion l6 and the rod has a section adjacent the knob I t which fits this portion. Between the section I! and the threaded portions IS the rod fits the bore l2, so that it is held steady therein. At its inner extremity the rod l3 abuts the stud 5.
The cover plate 2 has ribs l8 on its concave inner face at both sides of the stud 5, extending therefrom towards the ends of the plate, and at the outer ends of these ribs are projection-s E9. The razor blade 3 has the usual slot 26 in the middle. When the blade is between the guard and cover plate, the ribs l8 pass through the slot 20 into the cavity 7, and the projections 13 enter the apertures it. If the user desires an adjustment of the blade such as is shown in Figure l, the handle 4 is screwed upon the stud 5 as far as it will go and the rod I3 is at first retracted, so that its inner end is out of contact with the stud 5. The cover plate is thus drawn down against the blade and its edges bend the blade 3 over the ribs 8 so that its edges are close to the guard I. The rod is then screwed in to make contact with the stud 5.
On the other hand, if an adjustment with the cutting edges of the blade 3 farther from the guard I is desired, such as is illustrated in Figure 3, the user first makes sure that the rod is withdrawn slightly and then rotates the handle i so that the stud does not project so far into the bore I2. The turns of the spring 9 then expand and force the plate and blade and the guard apart. The pressure of the edges of the plate 2 on the blade 3 is thus eased, and the elasticity of the blade tends to make it become more nearly fiat. This is, the blade is bent to a smaller extent over the ribs 8. Then, by turning the knob 14, the inner end of the rod is forced against the stud, and the parts are bound in position. The razor can always be used without danger of the parts slipping or turning because the handle 4 and stem [4 press tightly against the guard and stud 5, binding the plate 2 because of the threaded engagement of the plate and handle, and the plate and razor are further secured against turning or twisting because the ribs [3 and the projections 19 go through the slot 20 in the razor and the projections 19 stay in the apertures E9 of the guard.
The construction and operation are therefore quite simple. The parts can be produced at relatively little expense, and the razor easily assembled and dismantled. The adjustment can readily and quickly be made to suit any individual user.
The plate 2 has the usual ribs or projections 2| at the corners to engage recesses 22 at the corners of the blade 3, and the edges of the guard I are of course bent away from the razor blade as indicated at 23, and the guard has slots 24 adjacent these bent edges.
The construction described is presented by way of example only, and changes in details may be adopted without departure from the general plan which contains the essential characteristics of the improvement.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
1. A razor comprising a guard, a cover member for securing a blade on said guard, the cover member having a threaded stud and the guard an opening through which the stud projects, the guard having parallel ribs at its sides for engaging the blade adjacent its cutting edges, a handle having a threaded bore in one end receivirig the stud and a rod in the handle, said rod having its inner end threaded and engaged in said bore to abut the stud and hold the cover member in adjusted position, the guard having a cavity between said ribs facing said member and said blade when the blade is in position, and a compressed spring in said cavity for exerting pressure on said blade and member and said guard.
2. A razor comprising a guard, a cover member for securing a blade on said guard, the cover member having a threaded stud and the guard an opening through which the stud projects, the guard having parallel ribs at its sides for engaging the blade adjacent its cutting edges, a handle having a. threaded bore in one end receiving the stud and a rod in the handle, said rod having its inner end threaded and engaged in said bore to abut the stud and hold the cover member in adjusted position, the guard having a cavity between said ribs facing said member and said blade when the blade is in position, and a compressed spring in said cavity for exerting pressure on said blade and member and said guard, said spring having a coiled part surrounding said studs, and having its ends attached to the guard adjacent the ends thereof.
