Be it known that I, Bonner A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelph a and State of Pennsylvania,have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in lilair-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

A nut 25 is positioned on the screw threaded post 22 and bears against the outer face of the extension 24. A look nut 26 is preferably provided on the post 22 and adapted to engage the inner surface of the extension 24 as clearly shown in Figure 3.- Thus by turning downwardly upon the nut 25, the spring 17 will: be compressed and the comb and blade 7 will be moved toward each other so as .to vary the distance between the comb and blade for a purpose hereinafter described.

In the use of the device for cutting hair, the comb can be drawn through the hair against the scalp of a persons head and the distance between the comb and the blade 7 as shown in Figure 1 will determine the length of the hair to be -cut; it being noted that as the comb is drawn through the hair, the shears are operated so as to cut the hair projecting through the teeth of the comb. If it is desired to change the position of the comb such for example as changing from the right to the left hand the comb can be re moved as above described and changed to the position shown in Figure 2.

When the device is not desired for use 1 preferably compress the handle sections and apply an open link 27 in a position embracing the upper portion of the looped springs 11; the ends 28 of the handles serving as abutting means to prevent the link 27 from moving upwardly and the springs 11 compressing suiiiciently to form bowed portions ll so as to hold the link in position.

While l have described my invention as taking a particular form. it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may becha-nged "ithout departing from the spirit tnereot and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope oi. the appended claims.

A. hair cutting device including a pair of shears having blades movably connected togetherfa comb; a flexible connection for said combto the shears: and means for varying the tension. of said flexible connection whereby the comb can be moved toward or from the cuttin plane of the blades; substantially as described.

4-. A hair cutting device including two cooperating cutting blades, one of said blades iacent the cutting edges of having a projecting tongue; a housing having a slot therein through which said tongue can be projected; a binding screw in said housing adapted to clamp said tongue thereto; and a comb positioned adjacent the cutting edge of said blades and connected to said housing; substantially as described.

5. A hair cutting device including two cooperating cutting blades, one of said blades having a projecting tongue; a housing having aslot therein through which said tongue can be projected; a binding screw in said housing adapted to clamp said tongue thereto; a comb; a looped spring having its opposite ends espectively secured to said comb and housing; and means for compressing said spring whereby the comb is moved toward. said cutting blades; substantially as described.

6. A hair cutting device including two cooperating cutting blades; a comb located adsaid blades; a looped spring having its end portions respectively secured to one of said blades and to said comb; and means for compressing said spring whereby the comb will be moved toward said cutting edges; substantially as described. s

7. A hair cutting device including two cooperating ci'itting blades; a comb'located adjacent the cutting edges of said blades; a looped spring having its end portions respectively secured to one of said blades and. to said comb; and co-acting screw threaded members for compressing said spring whereby the comb is moved toward the cutting edges of said blades; substantially as described.
