COMBINED SHAPER AND TRIMMING SCISSORS Filed April 17 1950 C iilH INVENTOR. SAMUEL mas/0.

1 toba'rbering equipment and more particularly to a combined shaper and trimmingscissors for cutting and trimming hair. ,i The; 'usual method for cutting and {trimming hair by professional barbersand beauticians'involves the use of a certain type of scissors for cutting the hair and then the use of another device consisting of a comb and sharp blade, for
trimming. The need for two and sometimes three tools for this purpose is of considerable inconvenience and causes loss of time. In this invention a pair of scissors is suitably combined with a trimmer that permits cutting and trimming of the hair to be done independently of each other but with the same implement. A simple turn of the tool in the hand of the user allows either function to be accomplished. The ues of a clipper or other common cutter of hair is provided in the usual manner, but regardless of its use, the scissors and a trimmer are also required for the completion of the Work.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a new and improved hair cutting and trimming implement that will avoid one or more of the disadvantages and limitations of the previous devices in this line of work.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hair cutting and trimming implement manually actuated that will be convenient to employ and simple in structure.
A further object of the inventionis to provide a new and improved hair cutting and trimming implement for manipulation that will include a replaceable blade in the structure of a scissors located where it will not interfere with the ordinary work of cutting hair therewith but which will permit the blade to do the trimming with appropriate effectiveness.
An additional object of this invention is to provide a new and improved hair cutting and. trimming implement that will be safe to use and easy to manipulate.
Other objects will become apparent as the invention is further detailed.
For a better understanding of the invention and the objects thereof reference is made toaccompanying drawings. These drawings illustrate a particular form of the invention and with the following description form an example of a structure that employs the principles embodied in it, while the claim indicates the scope of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a side view with parts in section of a combined shaper and trimming scissors embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1 in open position;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the leg showing the combined shaper and trimming portion;

- Fig'ure 4 is asec'tion al view taken along line Figure *5 is-a sideview of the blade'used in th shaper portion-of the device. 2 =Similar reference characters refer to'thes'ame parts throughout the drawings.
The drawings indicate an implement having the general designof hair cutting scissors It], with handles including conventional loops II, and cutting blades l2 formed on the end opposite to the side beyond the pivoting screw I3 that holds them together. The blades are thin and pointed in the conventional way and taper from the middle where the pivoting screw is located to the points. The middle portion [4 is enlarged or humped and thickened on one of the blades adjacent the pivot I3 on the side away from its cutting edge l5 thereof so it will not interfere with the ordinary hair cutting action of the scissors by the blades. The hump is preferably closed at the end portion l6 towards the point of the blade and open at the opposite end ll. The hump has a tapering longitudinal slot [8 through it of an interior contour suitable for the reception of a thin fiat blade 20, which is wider at the rear l9, than in the front and perforated at 2| to allow the insertion of a pin to hold the plate in place and to permit its removal and provided with a slot 32 to receive spring finger 33. The tapering facilitates tapering and fitting of the blade 20 in the slot. The lower edge 22 of the hump is gridded like a safety razor guard except that the gridcloses around the lower edge portion 22 and acts as a guard over the sharpened edge 23 of the thin blade 20, so the blade can be used to cut from either the right or left hand side, an prevent the blade from cutting the skin of the customer.
The implement is used as scissors in the conventional manner using the blades I2 for the purpose. The trimming portion is used by drawing the grid portion 22 across the hair to be trimmed somewhat like that followed in the use of a comb and straight razor, with the sharpened edge of the blade 20 doing the trimming.
The implement adds practically no extra weight or bulk to the conventional form of scissors but affords convenience which a busy barber or beautician can greatly. appreciate. He has the device available in his hand for either hair cutting or trimming and in a form that is convenient to handle and use.
While but one general form of the invention is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, itis not desired to limit this application for patent to this particular form, as it is appreciated that other forms of constructions could be made that would use the same principles and come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A pair of scissors having a pair of .co-acting cutting blades facing each other a'pivot between said blades, apair-of handles extending from said. I pivot oppositely to the cutting blades, one of said blades having an open-ended thickened portion: ,1,
hollowed out at its outside face to form a housing tapering internally from itsendnearfthe pivot; to the opposite endtoward the point of said last mentioned blade, said thickened portion having a l series of fingers between notches forming agrid along the edge thereof opposite to the cutting" edge, a removable tapered blade in the hollow thickened portion insertible by sliding movement along the outside face ofrthe blade into,ther hous ing, said blade having a cutting edge coi extensive with; the grid-formed =portion of the thickened portion, and quick detachableimeansgfonsecuring the blad'e in the housing whereby 1thescissors may selectively be used to out hair between the cutting blades and to trim hair with the blade while the scissors are held by the handles, said means consistingof a spring fingencarried byetherthickened portion, said blade havin'g an opening ther'ein to receive said finger when in place in the housing.
