In flame cutting metal requiring a higher cutting temperature than iron, e.g. stainless steel, using a flame, an oxygen stream and a flux, the flux is delivered to the cutting point in a stream of non-inflammable gas which includes at least 5 per cent of hydrogen by volume, 5-38 per cent hydrogen and 95-62 per cent nitrogen, or helium, argon, &c. or carbon dioxide mixed with at least 5 per cent hydrogen may form the non-inflammable gas while ammonia, the chemical combination of hydrogen and nitrogen, may be employed.
