Abstract

672,725. Prestressed reinforced concrete. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 31, 1950 [July 29, 1949], No. 20006/49. Class 20(iv) In the production of prestressed reinforced concrete the wire reinforcement 9 is gripped by wedges 10 fitting in coacting holes 8 in anchor plates 6, 7, the anchor plates are arranged between the end walls 2, 3 of the mould 1, and tension is applied to the plates by means of bars or the like 4, 5, detachably secured to the plates and extending through the end walls. of the mould, the anchor plates being cast permanently in the concrete. The wires are preferably cut so that they extend beyond plates 6, 7, but fall short of the ends of the mould so that end corrosion is prevented, but the wires act as normal reinforcement at the ends. The wires are preferably overtensioned by about 5 per cent before being placed in the mould to lessen the liability to creep. As shown, the rods 4 and 5 screw into plates 6 and 7 but may be otherwise attached, and rod 5 is anchored by a nut 11 at the end wall 3 while rod 4 is secured to a cross-bar 13 of a hydraulic ram system 14 which is anchored to a yoke 16 engaging the end wall 2. When the desired tension has been applied the rod 4 is secured by screwing up nut 15 so that it contacts wall 2, and the concrete is cast. When the concrete is cured rods 4 and 5 are removed and the holes grouted. Alternatively bars 4 and 5 may be connected between a hydraulic ram system and an anchorage which are fixed relatively to each other, e.g. to the floor, so that the stress is not applied to the mould.
