Abstract
581,815. Reinforced concrete. DOWSETT ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION, Ltd., BARBER, R. S. V., and LESTER, D. R. Sept. 28, 1943, No. 15923. [Class 20 (iv)] Apparatus for use in the manufacture of prestressed reinforced concrete sleepers and like beams. comprises a stout fixed pedestal 12, 13, having a head-such as pairs of short uprights 14-through which the reinforcing wires can pass, one or more brackets 15 secured to the head, and a wire anchorage plate 17 movable on each bracket and separated from the head by several adjusting screws 18. In operation, the various reinforcing wires, which may pass through a line of moulds and have their other ends suitably anchored, are passed singly or in pairs through holes 19 in a plate 17 and are subjected to tension, e.g., by hydraulic means, screw action, or by means of a winch. When the required tension has been attained the wires are fixed to the plate either by wedges 21 or by ferrules or the like. The screws 18 are adjusted to prevent movement of the plate along its supporting bracket. Concrete is now poured into the moulds and after it has set the screws 18 are turned to relieve the tension on the wires. The plates 17 shown are triangular in shape and have grooves in their bases for engaging guiding fillets 16 on the brackets 15. Specifications 581,827 and 581,828 are referred to.
