564,938. Reinforced concrete sleepers. DOWSETT ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION, Ltd., and BARBER, R. S. V. April 16, 1943, No. 6149. [Class 20 (iv)] [Also in Group V] A pre-stressed reinforced concrete sleeper, beam, or slab is made in a mould 12 having a fixed end plate 14 to which the reinforcing wires are secured, and a movable end plate 16 carried by a plunger 18 to which the wires are secured by wedges 20. A cover 21 is carried by hydraulic rams 23 and is a sliding fit in the mould. In operation, the mould is filled with concrete and pressure applied by the cover 21. Water escapes through tubes 24 having openings 25 and the outward pressure on the plunger 18 stresses the'wires. When discharge of water ceases, rods 27 are pushed down to free the tubes 24 of concrete, and the tubes are then pushed down until the openings 25 are covered. The walls of the mould and the cover may be formed as a jacket for hot water or steam to expedite the setting of the concrete, and vibration may also be applied to the mould or cover.
