540,714. Reinforced concrete. SCHORER H. Jan. 10, 1941, No. 356. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1940. [Class 20 (iv)] In the production of a reinforced concrete structure in which such portions of the concrete which are subject to tensile and shearing stresses when under load are pre-compressed, units are employed each having a rod-like compression member 1 and wire tension members 3, 4 arranged around the member and placed in the mould before the concrete is poured. The tension members are looped round lugs 6 on nuts 5 through which, at one end, pass screwed bolts 7 bearing, with the interposition of balls 9, on the ends of the rods 1. The wires pass around spacers 2 and are wound in helices in opposite directions and, by tightening the bolts 7, are uniformly pre-stressed. The rods may be enclosed sheaths 10 of paraffined paper and may be withdrawn after the concrete has set and the bolts 7 released, the compressive force in the rods being transferred to the concrete. The tension wires are cut along the exterior face and the holes formed by the bolts filled with cement mortar. In Fig. 5, the compression member is formed by a number of rods 21 held together by ties 22, and the wires 23 are passed inside members 27 and over spacers 24. The ends of the wires are preliminarily held by screws 35 until the setting is corrected when cover plates 36 are placed over the wires and screws 38 tightened to hold the wires firmly between the cover plates and the body of the securing means. The screws 43 are then tightened and the wires stretched as before.
