May 1, 1936, Nos. 12453 and 12454. Convention dates, May 4, 1935 and July 11, 1935. [Class 109] A knob or stop 2 for receiving a securing element is formed upon a wire rope or cable 1 by clamping the rope by jaws 3, 4 on either side of the position desired, moving the jaws 3, 4 towards one another to spread the cable between the jaws, disposing a mould 8 around the spread part, casting in the mould a filling material such as hydraulic cement or a metal fusible at low temperature, and removing the jaws after the filling material has set and hardened. The cement or metal sleeve 7 may be wound with steel wires, or the mould 8 may constitute a hoop. As applied to a cable of a suspension bridge, the knob or stop may be formed after the cable has been mounted in the structure of the bridge. As shown in Fig. 8, a number of such knobs may be secured on a cable, e.g. in mooring a cable of a suspension bridge, and fastening pieces 12<a>, 12b upon the knobs may be mounted upon screwed rods 10, 11 so that first one fastening means 12<a> may be brought into operation upon breakage of a socket 9, and subsequently the second means 12b can be brought into use when the means 12<a> fails. Alternatively, part of the load may be taken by each of the fastening means.
