Abstract
707,144. Reinforced concrete. STRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN Ltd. Feb. 25, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4628/51. Class 20 (4) A prestressed structural member 1 of concrete, earthenware or the like is formed with a cavity through which reinforcing rods or wires 3 are passed, the tension in the wires being held by anchor plates 4 whilst concrete or cement grout, supplied to the cavity, sets. The tension is held finally by bond with the concrete filling and the plates 4 are removed. The plates 4, which may be as described in Specification 690,981, may be removed by re-tensioning the wires and removing the wedges, or the plates may bear against the ends of the member 1 through spacers, in which case the wires may be cut off beneath the plates 4. The wires may have plain surfaces, or may be roughened, indented or otherwise formed, e.g. by twisting the wires in a cable twisting machine; forming helical grooves on their surfaces or by passing through embossed rollers. The bond between the concrete and reinforcement may receive assistance, in holding the tension in the wires, by casting blocks 10 at the end of the member 1 to embed the bent over ends of the reinforcements. One end of the wires may be embedded in a concrete block before tensioning, in which case only one anchor plate 4 is used. Specification 707,447 also is referred to.
