Abstract
672,391. Electromagnetic interrupters. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. March 16, 1950. [March 17, 1949] No. 6607/60. Class 38 (v). In an electromagnetic vibratory interrupter having an armature 35 carried by a reed 19, the moving contacts are also carried by the reed and consist of two composite arms such as shown in Fig. 4, arranged one on each side of the reed, each composite arm having two contacts 62, 63 forming part of cantilever springs 38, 39 attached at the base to the reed. In the form shown, the interrupter forms part of a system including a transformer for converting low tension D.C. to high tension D.C. and has "interrupting contacts 63 and "rectifying" contacts 62. The neck 38 is longer than the neck 39 in order that the contacts after being staggered as shown in Fig. 1, may be on the same level and able to co-operate with the respective fixed contact discs 44 and 45 which are mounted on cantilever springs. The movable "interrupter" contact springs may consist of spring steel plated with silver and they may engage fixed contacts of silver alloy ; in the case of the rectifier contacts the spring steel may be plated with platinum or its alloys and engage fixed contacts of tungsten. The connections are preferably such that the reed is of negative potential. This causes transference of metal to the reed arms and its dispersal thence in a fine dust.
