Abstract

671,618. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. June 6, 1950 [June 15, 1949], No. 14094/50. Class 8 (i) The drive for a rotary agitator 8, Fig. 1, mounted within a suction cleaner nozzle 7 comprises a belt 32 between the agitator and a pulley 30 at one end of a layshaft 29 which passes through a baffle 37 projecting into the suction airway 16 between two portions of its length, and a pulley 28 on the other end of the shaft 29 connected by a belt 31 to a fan shaft pulley 27 so that both belts 31, 32 are in the air stream ; the airway 16 being closed between the two said portions by a converter for off-the-floor cleaning when in position. The baffle 37 forms a housing for shaft bearings 36 and the converter is inserted downwards through a central opening 45 in the top of the cleaner body so that its end 50, Fig. 3, engages the housing 37 and walls 14, 15 of the passageway 16 and thus seals the nozzle from a portion 17 of the suction passage 16.
