Class 122(i) A piston is formed entirely or partly of a mixture of sintered metal and ceramic powder. The proportion of ceramic powder may increase from 0 per cent to 100 per cent in the direction of the piston head or the head may comprise a layer of pure ceramic ajoining a layer having varying proportions of metal powder terminating in a layer of pure metal which is welded or sintered to a metal skirt.
