Abstract
671,525. Copy-milling. MARCHANT, L. E. Oct. 23, 1950 [Nov. 3, 1949], No. 25760/50. Class 83 (iii). A tracer stylus for a copying-machine, such as a copy-milling machine operating by parallel traverses, is rapidly vibrated by an unbalanced rotating mass mounted on it, thus reducing its frictional drag on the pattern. In one form, Fig. 1, the stylus 5 is locked in a holder 3 by a collet nut 4 and a gapped ball race 12 is formed round the stylus by collars 7 and 11. Pressurefluid, preferably air, from a pipe 9 is admitted to an annular chamber 8 in the upper collar and passes down a helical groove 7c in the collar to impinge on a ball 13 and rotate it rapidly round the race 12, the air then escaping through the gap in the race. In another form, Fig. 2, an unbalanced turbine rotor 14 is rotated by air from a nozzle 18. In either form, the frequency of the vibrations can be varied by a throttle valve in the air supply and, to avoid resonance effects, the frequency should not be a multiple of the frequency at which the cutter teeth engage the blank.
