Abstract

791,723. Mineral fibres. DOWNEY, R. M. April 9, 1956 [April 29, 1955], No. 10734/56. Class 56. Mineral fibres are made by dropping molten material in front of a rotor 10 rotating rapidly in a substantially vertical plane and directing the molten material on to the rotor (from which it flies off, centrifugally, in fiberized form) by an upwardly and somewhat rearwardly directed air stream 56. The stream is deflected by the plate 48 and forms part of an annular stream surrounding the rotor This stream takes no part in the attenuation of the fibres but is merely directive. A guard 58 shuts off the part of the annular stream in line with the falling molten material. The rotor is cooled by water admitted through the helically threaded bore 20 of the hollow shaft carrying the rotor.
