Abstract

Mineral wool is produced by directing a stream of molten mineral on to a part of the periphery of a rotor rotating about a substantially horizontal axis, and directing a hot blast of gas traversely and axially of the rotor on the centrifugally extended tangential molten stream, thus shredding the stream into fibres which are projected into a collecting chamber. The gas, which may be air or steam, may emerge from an apertured annular conduit, and the blast may be spaced from or directed into contact with, the periphery of the disc. In Fig. 1 (not shown), molten slag falls from furnace 5 through opening 4 on to the periphery of rotating disc 3. Steam emerges through aperture or apertures of annular conduit 6 and projects the fibres through opening 8 into blow chamber 9. The outlet apertures 7 may be V-shaped as at 7c in Fig. 4 (not shown), or may be simple holes, or a single elongated circular slit. In a particular embodiment, the temperature of the stream emerging at 4 is 1450 DEG C., the pressure of the steam blast is 8 atmospheres, and the disc rotates at 2000 r.p.m.
