Abstract

1,136,228. Glass fibres. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 21 Sept., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 42058/66. Heading C1M. In a process for controlling glass fibre diameter in a centrifugal attenuation system, the rotor and attenuating means are adjustable relative to each other. A rotor 12, main driveshaft 13, and an interior column 14, through which molten glass from a supply 15 is delivered to the said rotor all surrounded by combustion housing 11, with apertures 28 for attenuating gases. The shaft 13 is mounted in a tube 35, and extending from the lowermost end of shaft 13 is an inner shaft 40 which is concentric with the main shaft and which has keys which allow the inner shaft to be moved relative to the main shaft whilst the two shafts are rotating together. The apparatus includes a mechanism to enable the inner shaft 40 to move in a direction generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the shafts. In operation molten glass is deposited on to the rotor and urged outwardly by centrifugal force through openings 80 in the peripheral wall 81 to form filaments of molten glass which are contacted by a hot gaseous blast from the aperture 28, said blast moving in a direction transverse to the movement of the filaments. If the fibres being produced are too coarse the inner shaft 40 can be moved so as to decrease the distance between the filaments and the attenuating means, the filaments then entering the hot gaseous blast at an area of higher temperature and higher velocity. Conversely if the fibres are too fine the rotor can be moved away from the attenuating means.
