Abstract

961,900. Glass fibre manufacture. JOHNSMANVILLE CORPORATION. July 20, 1962, No. 27923/62. Heading C1M. In making mineral wool by depositing molten mineral material 42 on to the outer surface of rotating fiberizing rotors 44, 49, 50 to form an incandescent ring around at least one of the rotors from which a plurality of fibres and unfiberized particles are ejected, the fibres and unfiberized particles are subjected to a laminar flow of fluid having a velocity within the range of 1000 to 5000 feet per minute to separate the fibres from the particles, the fluid moving transversely to the path of ejection of the fibres and particles. The rotors 44, 49, 50 are mounted in a chamber 13 having an aperture 17, through which the molten glass 42 is fed on to rotor 44 and through which flows the high, uniform velocity air from an aperture 12, and an opposed aperture 18 leading to a fibre collection chamber 14 with a conveyer belt 21 mounted on rollers 22 with a suction box 24 between to collect the fibres into a mat which is pressed between the outer roller 22 and a roller 27 on the end wall 25 of the chamber 14. The unfiberized particles 68 are collected in chamber 13 and the fibres passing into chamber 14 are sprayed with binder from apertures 20 in a pipe 19 surrounding the opening 18. The air flow through aperture 12 is induced by suction from the box 24 and the aperture 12 is formed in the front wall 32 of a housing 37 in which is mounted a housing 59 for the sleeves 47, 53, 54 in which the shafts 46, 51 and 52 of the rotors 44, 49, 50 are mounted, the housings 37, 59 combining to form a nozzle tapering towards the aperture 12. In Fig. 4 (not shown), different shapes of housings 37 and 59 give a long, straight passage nozzle. Both forms ensure that the air passes through the aperture 12 at a high uniform velocity and parallel to the axes of rotation of the rotors. The rotors are cooled through pipes 58.
