Abstract

671,158. Fluid bearings. SCHOPPE & FAESER FEINMECHANIK GES. March 7, 1950 [March 7, 1949], No. 5736/50. Class 12 (i). An air bearing, particularly for grinding- machines, machine-tools, &c., comprises a rotating part 1 axially and radially bedded by the bearing shell 2, 4. The cylinder 2 is enclosed by a further cylinder 3, both being the boundaries of an air chamber 7 connected to a compressed air pipe 6. The cylinder 2 is provided with jets (not shown) distributed uniformly over its surface and penetrating radially through it. A foil closes the cylinder 2 on its outside, and in line with the jets are outlets in this foil of about <SP>1</SP>/ 100 th the jet cross-section. The compressed air prevents contact of the rotating part 1 both with the cylinder 2 and also with the discs 4, through the latter of which jets may also or alternatively be provided. The rotating part 1 may form the squirrel cage of an electric motor, and one or more of the devices can be combined with an air stream turbine, the turbine and air bearing being connected to the same source of compressed air. The compressed air in the bearing may be replaced by any gas or gaseous mixture, or by steam.
