[Also in Group XI] A heating chamber for producing fibres from glass rods a has pairs of oppositely disposed heating strips 3 between which the rods a pass, the heating strips 3 being fitted into top and bottom flanges 2a of vertical wall supports 2 so as to leave a space 4 between each strip 3 and its associated vertical wall 2. The heating strips 3 have an angle section, T-section or arched section to form between the strips a narrow zone 5 in which the heating is intense. Below the heating strips there may be a cooling device 6 to congeal the threads c and the heating chamber may have a cover-plate 7 apertured to receive the glass rods a. One or more heat vents 8 may be provided in the upper flanges of the supports 2. The heating strips 3 may be heated by the passage of current therethrough or by gas flames, as shown. In the former case, the strips 3 are preferably made of steel of high specific resistance having low co.efficients of variation of properties with temperature.
