Classes 123(ii) and 123(iii) The uptake from the furnace 1 of a forced-flow steam boiler is divided into two passes by a wall 5 of steam-generating tubes. One pass houses a a superheater 11 which is shielded from the heat of the furnace by the tubes 4 of the wall 5, said tubes extending from a lower water header 3 along the floor anc back of the furnace to an upper header 6 connected to a steam-and-water drum, not shown; a bank 9 of steam-generating tubes 8, extending between headers 7, 10, is housed in the other pass. Above the header 6 is a damper 13 by means, of which the relative quantities of gases flowing through the two passes may be regulated to control the degree of superheat. the tube bank 9 and superheater 11 are preferably supported by the wall 5, and the straight parts of the tubes 4, 8, 11 within the furnace uptake may be horizontal or inclined. Economizers 12, also supported by the wall 5, may be fitted in the uptake passes. In a modification. the tubes 4 extend across both gas passes.
