A taper-turning attachment for lathes of the kind in which a cross-slide is moved by the interaction between an angularly-adjustable tangent bar and a slidably mounted cross-head connected to the cross-slide through a thrust element, has the latter in the form of a cylindrical member rotatable in a vertical bore in the cross-head adapted to embrace the tangent bar for transmission of thrust directly therefrom. A bracket 5 secured to the rear face of the cross-slide 2 slidably supports the usual tangentbar slide 6 which is anchored to the bed 1 by a bracket 8. The tangent-bar proper is pivoted to this slide at 7a, Fig. 2, and is clamped in adjusted position by bolts 7b, Fig. 1. A crosshead 9 is supported on rods 4 carried in bosses 5b on the bracket 5 and is secured also to the cross-slide. The cross-head is slidable along the rods when adjusting the cross-slide or tool but may be clamped thereto by nuts 9h. The usual rear thrust bearing 11c for the facing screw 11 is detachable from the cross-slide for a taper-turning operation and may then be connected by an extension 11g and a pin 12, Fig. 2, to the cross-head. The latter has a vertical cylindrical bore 10a in which a thrust element 10 is rotatable, the lower end of which is shaped to embrace the tangent bar 7; the thrust element is retained in the cross-head by a cover 9f. The rear embracing face of the cross-head is adjustable to take up wear between the tangentbar and the thrust element.
