Abstract

670,106. Testing physical qualities of materials. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. May 9, 1950 [May 26, 1949], No. 14159/49. Class 106 (ii). The pull-rod of a creep-testing machine comprises two portions connected by means operable to permit the portions to move rapidly relative to each other so as to produce a sudden increase in the effective length of the pull-rod. The specimen (not shown), which is maintained at a desired temperature by an electric furnace, is tensioned by a pull-rod connected by a lever system to a weigh-beam carrying a travelling- weight. If the furnace fails, the contraction of the speciment raises the end of the weigh-beam 6 and a trip-lever 21 is rocked. An extension 23 of this lever rocks a catch 20 to release a pivoted stop-arm 19 for a plunger 17. The plunger is engaged by a roller 15 held between pins or rollers 13, 14, mounted respectively in a forked member 11 and a lug 12 secured to the two parts of the pull-rod, and held slightly out of alignment therewith by a stop 16. When the plunger 17 is freed, the pins 13, 14, which are urged together by the tensioning load, force the roller 15 from between them and move into contact with one another, thus increasing the length of the pull-rod to prevent damage to the apparatus by the weigh-beam engaging its stop. In a different arrangement, the catch 20 is operated by a solenoid associated with a switch operated by the weigh - beam. The solenoid may alternatively be connected in the furnace circuit and arranged so that, if the supply fails, the catch 20 is operated. The stop 16 may be spring-loaded to increase the speed of operation of the safety-device.
