A marking device for use in textile machines comprises a launching ramp having a magazine of markers which are released to fall one at a time on to the fabric when a defect in the fabric is observed. The launching ramp 17 which is adjustable as at 28, comprises two parallel rails 18 down which markers 16 having cylindrical heads 21 and chain tails 22 are constrained to run. Mounted on the ramp is a retaining mechanism 26 for the markers, which mechanism comprises a frame 29 pivoted at 30 and has two sets of holding pins 31 and 32, the latter of which normally hold the markers in position. When a defect is observed, an observer presses a button to operate an electrical circuit which energizes an electromagnet 33 thereby rocking the frame 29 and releasing a marker which slides down the ramp and drops on to the fabric. The pins 31 hold the next marker in position while the frame is being rocked. The electrical circuit has a delay device which operates the mechanism as the defect comes below the ramp and a switch is provided in the circuit operated by the machine to further delay release of a marker if it would foul the machine A plurality of marking devices could be used to indicate different defects and a bell may be provided to indicate when there are no reserve markers on the ramp.
