Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises rubber and asphalt blended together and dissolved in a volatile solvent with an amount of water not exceeding approximately 10 per cent of the solvent, the asphalt being present in the order of 3/4 to 1 1/2 that of the rubber by weight and the amount of the solvent being greater by weight than the rubber. Up to 5 per cent of alkali hydroxide may also be added. In an example red inner tube reclaimed rubber is mixed with steam refined petroleum residual asphalt, water, aqueous caustic soda solution, denatured ethyl alcohol and a petroleum distillate to give a composition for use as a roof pad cement in the construction of automobile bodies and for silencing pads for calculating and like machines. In a further example, the above asphalt is replaced by a brown residual petroleum asphalt and the caustic soda by a mixture of limed resin and kaolin clay. Other specified materials which may be added are amyl and butyl alcohols, ethyl and amyl acetate, gasoline and saturated polymers of oxygen and sulphur derivatives of terpenes and naphthylamines.
