Abstract

An acid resistant moulded article such as a battery box is made from a composition comprising asphalt, an acid resistant mineral filler, an acid-attackable organic fibre and a protective material consisting, at least in part of a solid resinous material known as RM441 consisting essentially of a polymerization product from resorcinol. The mineral filler may be powdered coal, powdered glass, or pyrophillite, and the organic fibre may be paper scraps, cotton linters, fabric from tyres and rayon. The composition may be softened by adding hydrogenated tallow fatty acid, stearinepitch, waxes, pine tar oil, hydrocarbon oils, rubber hydrocarbons, linseed oil, and candelilla-, montan-, Japan-, carnauba-, ceresin-, and bees-wax. A preferred composition comprises asphalt 42 per cent, fibre reclaimed from old tyres 12 per cent, filler 42 per cent, and protective material consisting of a 50 : 50 mixture of RM441 and monomeric furfuryl alcohol.
