Abstract
In preparing a road tar emulsion by the two-stage process of Specification 465,589, a fatty acid pitch, for example stearine pitch, is added to the tar before or during its emulsification. The amount of stearine pitch may be up to 10 parts by weight (preferably 5 parts) per 100 parts of tar. A volatile oil, e.g. crude heavy solvent naphtha, toluole, or benzole, may be added to the tar or to the emulsion. The emulsifying agent in both stages may be an alkali soap, e.g. the sodium soap of liquid rosin; alternatively dilute alkali or ammonia may be used in the invert stage and an alkaline solution of casein containing carbolic acid in the revert stage. Petroleum oil may be added to the tar as described in Specification 601,784, [Group V], or a primer included in the emulsion as described in Specification 474,163, [Group V]. The emulsion is used to coat mineral aggregate mixed with a filler (see Group V) or for soil stabilization.ALSO:Mineral aggregate (e.g shingle) mixed with a filler (e.g Portland cement) is coated with a road tar emulsion made by the two-stage process of Specification 465,589, [Group III], with the inclusion of a fatty acid pitch, e.g. stearine pitch (see Group III). The rate of cure of the aggregate is accelerated by the addition of a volatile oil, e.g. crude heavy solvent naphtha, toluole, or benzole, to the tar, the emulsion, or the aggregate. A further quantity of filler may be added after the emulsion has broken. Petroleum oil may be added to the tar as described in Specification 601,784, or a primer included in the emulsion as described in Specification 474,163.
