Abstract

572,765. Composition fuel. BATHER, J. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15461. [Class 50] A solid fuel compressed into tablet form is made by mixing paraformaldehyde, or metaldehyde, or both, with a small proportion of a phenol-aldehyde condensation product, and with hexamine, the total aldehyde content being' greater than 50 per cent of the fuel. The condensation product is formed by the addition of from 2 to 10 per cent of phenol of the total aldehyde. The hexamine may be added as such, or by the addition of ammonia, or an ammonium salt, to convert the aldehyde into hexamine. A combustible natural or synthetic resin may be added to bind the product, for example oleo resin from the distillation of turpentine, or copal, pontianac, kauri or soft manilla resins, or resin's prepared from the condensation of a cyclic ketone with an aldehyde, or methyl cellulose may be employed. A lubricant may be added such as butyl stearate, triamyl borate, benzyl acetate, butyl acetate, furfural, ethyl glycol, or esters thereof, methyl-cyclohexanone, or diacetone alcohol, not exceeding 2 per cent of the total aldehyde content. Rubber latex may be used as a binder, but a lubricant such as lauric acid or paraffin wax should be added. Small amounts of flame-colouring substances such as calcium carbonate or boric acid may be included, and magnesium peroxide to assist the combustion. In an example, 100 parts paraformaldehyde are mixed with 4 parts dry ammonium carbonate, and dampened with 2 parts butyl acetate, and to the mixture are added 1 part of para- or meta-cresol dissolved in .5 parts alcohol, 1 part of a synthetic resin prepared by the condensation of formaldehyde and methyl cyclohexane, .3 parts of butyl stearate, .1 parts of calcium carbonate, and 2 parts of magnesium peroxide.
