Abstract

Resin-containing sawdust, waste wood and the like is heated in water with a hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal and evaporated to dryness to obtain a powder which can be moulded at a relatively low pressure and temperature. An additional thermoplastic or thermosetting material such as phenol aldehyde, urea formaldehyde, or polyvinyl resin, cellulose acetate, bitumen, pitch, glue, casein, or rubber may be added to the sawdust as a solution or emulsion before evaporation of the water. The sawdust may be swelled before treatment, for example, by the addition of calcium thiocyanate. Additional substances, such as hardening agents, plasticisers, weighting, colouring or preserving agents may also be added. Numerous examples are given of which the following is typical:- 100 parts by weight of oak sawdust and 100 parts of fir sawdust are mixed with 100 parts of water containing 5 parts of calcium thiocyanate and allowed to stand for 12 hours. 4 parts of calcium oxide in 80 parts of water are added and the mixture is heated. To this is added 10 parts of glue in 100 parts of water containing 2 parts of linseed oil and 2 per cent of cobalt resinate. After boiling 5 parts of copper sulphate in 100 parts of water containing 40 parts of formaldehyde are added. The mass is evaporated to dryness and moulded at 150 DEG C. for 30 mins. at a pressure of 800-1400 lbs. per sq. in.
