Abstract

An adhesive composition is stabilized against micro-organism attack by the addition thereto of a stabilizing amount of a nitro-olefin having the general formula <FORM:1011047/C4-C5/1> wherein R is hydrogen or C1 to C6 alkyl and R1 is aryl, halo-substituted aryl or furyl. From 100 to 1000 p.p.m. of the nitro-olefin may be added. Examples are given of the addition of 2 - nitro - 1 - phenyl - 1 - butene, 2 - nitro - 1 - phenyl - 1 - propene, 2 - nitro - 1 - p - chloro - phenyl - 1 - butene and 2 - nitro - 1 - furyl - 1 - butene to adhesives based on casein, polyvinyl alcohol-starch mixture, dextrin, gum arabic, animal glue, and pine resin: the process is generallp applicable to animal, vegetable including rubber latex and natural resin, and synthetic, such as urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, acrylic and vinyl resin, adhesives.ALSO:Adhesives including those based on vinyl and acrylic resins are stabilized against microorganism attack by adding thereto a nitroolefin of the formula <FORM:1011047/C3/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or C1 to C6 alkyl and R is aryl, halo-substituted aryl or furyl. In Example II a composition containing polyvinyl alcohol and starch is stabilized by 2-nitro-1-phenyl-1-butene, 2-nitro-1-phenyl-1-propene, 2-nitro - 1 - p - chlorophenyl - 1 - butene and 2-nitro-1-furyl-1-butene.
