Abstract

669,505. Photographic developing solutions. KODAK, Ltd. April 12, 1950 [April 12, 1949] No. 8975/50. Class 98 (ii). A photographic developing solution contains a primary aromatic amino developing agent and a sulphonate of the formula wherein R is H, an alkyl radical containing not more than five carbon atoms (i.e. methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or amyl), or a fused-on saturated carbocyclic ring, and M is ammonium or an alkali metal radical. The sulphonate may be present in an amount between 20 and 200 and preferably between 50 and 100 grams per litre of developing solution, and increases the solubility of the developing agent and permits the addition of larger quantities of the latter to the developing solution. The developing solution may also contain a colour coupler. Sulphonates specified are sodium benzene sulphonate, o-, m- and p-xylenesulphonate, p-cymenesulphonate, p-tert.-butylbenzenesulphonate, and 1: 2: 3: 4- tetrahydronaphthalene-5-sulphonate. The developing agent 4 - amino - N: N - diethyl - m - (#-methylsulphonamidoethyl)-aniline is shown to be much more soluble in a developing solution on the addition of sodium p-xylenesulphonate. A colour developing solution includes 3 - methyl - 4 - amino - N - ethyl: N - (# - methylsulphonamidoethyl)-aniline, sodium pcymenesulphonate, and 2: 4-dichloro-α-naphthol.
