989,383. Photographic developers. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN NV. June 18, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 23349/62. Heading G2C. A photographic silver halide developing solution comprises hydroquinone and a compound of the formula: wherein either (i) R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl groups, R 4 is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group of at most 8 carbon atoms or a sulpho-alkyl group containing 3-8 carbon atoms and X is hydrogen, or (ii) R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or substituted alkyl groups, R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen and X is an electron-donating group such as amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, sulphonamido or alkoxy, or (iii) R 2 and X are as in (ii) and R 1 , or R 1 and R 2 represents a propylene chain joined to the ortho-position of the benzene ring, or X may be hydrogen or alkyl. Examples of compounds wherein the symbols have values as in (ii) above are 4-diethylamino-aniline substituted in the 2-position by amino, methylamino, methylsulphonamido or ethoxy groups. Compounds wherein the symbols have values as in (iii) above are 6-amino-1-methyl (or w-sulphobutyl)-1; 2; 3; 4-tetrahydroquinoline and 9-amino-julolidine.
