Abstract
A colour coupler for incorporation in a silver salt emulsion or in an aromatic amino developer has the general formula <FORM:0564713/IV/1> wherein R is H or alkyl and X is a substituent such as nitro, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, or fused-on benzene ring similarly substituted. 4- or 6-methylcarbostyril dissolved in a mixture of ethylene glycol and methyl alcohol may be added to a developing solution comprising N : N - diethyl - p - phenylenediamine hydrochloride, sodium sulphite, and sodium carbonate. Other examples are 4-methyl-6-nitrocarbostyril (prepared either by nitrating 4-methylcarbostyril or from p - nitroacetoacetanilide), 4 - methyl - 6 - methoxycarbostyril (prepared from p-methoxyacetoacetanilide), and 4-methyl-7 : 8-benzcarbostyril (prepared from acetoacet-a -naphthylamide). According to the Provisional Specification, R may be substituted and may also be aralkyl, alkaryl, or aryl, and X may be more than one substituent or fused-on ring. The coupler may also have the formula <FORM:0564713/IV/2>
