Abstract

Benzimidazol-2-one or 5-methyl-benzimidazol-2-one is reacted with aqueous formaldehyde to yield 1:3-dihydroxymethyl-benzimidazol-2-one or 1:3-dihydroxymethyl-5-methylbenzimidazol-2-one. The products may be used to harden gelatine, e.g. in photographic emulsions (see Group V).ALSO:A gelatine composition containing water is hardened by incorporating in it 1 : 3 dihydroxymethyl-benzimidazol-2-one or a derivative having an alkyl or halogen substituent in the benzene ring, e.g. 1 : 3-dihydroxymethyl-5 methyl-benzimidazol-2-one. The substituent alkyl radicle alternatively may be ethyl or isopropyl. The halogen may be chlorine, bromine or fluorine. The amount of hardener incorporated in the composition may vary from 0.1 to 10 per cent of the weight of gelatine. The pH value of the composition during incorporation is, preferably not less than about 6.5. The composition may be a photographic emulsion, e.g. a silver halide emulsion. The emulsion may be in the form of a layer coated on film or paper. The layer may be an incubated layer, may contain a latent image or may be a developed layer. The hardener may be incorporated in the layer by treating it with an aqueous solution of the hardener, having a pH value not less than 8. This solution may also contain sodium sulphate, sodium carbonate, borax and boric acid. The layer, hardened as aforesaid, may be treated with an aqueous solution of resorcinol and resorcylic aldehyde to make it very hard.
