Class 82(ii) A washing box, of the kind having a bed on to which the mixture of light and heavy material to be separated is continuously fed, water below the bed being pulsated to cause the heavy material to settle on the bed whilst the suspended lighter material overflows through an outlet, is provided with a separate compartment below an extension of the washing bed beyond the slide-controlled exit at the end of the bed, the movement of the water in the separate compartment being controlled independently of that below the washing bed, and the extension, as a whole being adapted to be inclined at any required angle. Washing beds 20, 21 extend over compartments formed by partitions 11, 12, 13, 18, each compartment communicating with a pulsator 19; material to be separated is fed into the box at 22 and lighter material leaves at 23 ; heavier material leaves through slide-controlled exits 24, 25 beyond which the beds are extended at 28, 29 the extensions being hinged to the beds and being adjustable in inclination. Such extensions surmount compartments 30, 31 communicating with pulsators 35, 36 independently controlled by swimmers 37, 38 resting on the heavy material on the beds.
