938,526. Cleaning root crops; separating granular materials. ELFA-APPARATE-VERTRIEBS-G.m.b.H. March 13, 1962 [March 21, 1961], No. 9543/62. Class 117. Apparatus for removing stones, sand and the like from root crops carried in a stream of water in a channel 1, has a container 2 beneath the channel formed with at least two chambers 2a and 2b connecting with the channel, one upstream of the other, one covered with a waterpermeable cover, the other open at the top to serve as a drop-shaft for sediment, and means for circulating water to and from the channel 1 via the chambers. The chamber 2a has a pivoted grid 3 where it enters the channel to control the size of the opening whilst the chamber 2b is closed at the top by a roller grid which allows passage of water, but not of the roots &c. The water is circulated in the container by a propeller 7 in a cross channel between the two chambers. A worm 10 carries away the sediment.
