Abstract

Root crops are taken from a hopper by a conveyer and dropped on a faster moving elevator where the change of velocity causes them to rumble to dislodge adherent soil. The elevator may run at twice the rate of the feeding conveyer and the feed may be regulated by an adjustable gate or by varying the speed of the conveyer. A drag chain, frame, plate, or mesh may be adjustably suspended over the roots on the elevator to retard passage of the roots and consequently control the time spent rumbling. The crop may be sprayed with water which is filtered and recirculated.
